A team composed of Oliver McMillan and Collins Development, both of San Diego, has been awarded the contract to build a $40-million mixed-use development in downtown San Juan Capistrano, ending a 16-month competition by the city’s redevelopment agency.

The eight-acre Historic Town Center, expected to be in construction by the beginning of 1989, was designed by SGPA Planning & Architecture, San Diego. It will include a 125-room hotel, 60,000 square feet of retail space with a pedestrian plaza, at least two new restaurants and underground parking.

Morgan Dene Oliver of Oliver McMillan said the project’s overall orientation will be toward the famous Mission San Juan Capistrano, with care taken to preserving the village atmosphere which has historically surrounded the mission.
