Growing Kiwi Fruit

Share

Q: What are the requirements for growing kiwi fruit?--G.W., Palos Verdes

A: Kiwi fruit can be grown in most Southern California climatic zones, provided the plants are given enough water and are fertilized regularly. Pollination and fruit set can take place only if male and female plants are planted. Of the female varieties, ‘Chico’ and ‘Hayward’ are the most reliable. Kiwi vines need plenty of support as they grow, so use a trellis that is sturdy and large.

Q: The bluegrass sod lawn we had installed a little more than a year ago is now full of weedy grasses. I water it daily during warm weather, and I feed it regularly. What am I doing wrong?--B.C., Los Angeles

A: Irrigation practices that promote good turf-grass growth also increase the number of weeds. Fertilize and water only to the degree necessary, avoid mowing the grass too short, and never water every day--no matter how warm the weather.

Q: I have a valuable tree that needs some rot removed, a cable added and a limb removed. How can I tell a good tree doctor from a poor one if I have only a telephone book to go on?--C.A., Glendale

A: Tree doctors, or arborists, are generally qualified, experienced professionals. The Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture administers a voluntary program that examines and certifies arborists. Most also carry a sufficient amount of the proper insurance.
