The maiden flight of India’s new satellite-launching rocket failed shortly after blastoff, and disappointed scientists said the rocket and a satellite it carried probably plunged into the Bay of Bengal. The launch from the island of Sriharikota was declared a failure when the Mission Control Center lost contact with the rocket shortly after liftoff. The five-stage rocket was designed to replace a launch vehicle that has been the workhorse of India’s space program.
