Actors, athletes and recording artists urged Americans to swear off drinking for an “Alcohol-Free Weekend” April 3-5 in an event sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism. April has been designated National Alcohol Awareness Month, and the council said that one in 10 American adults is an alcoholic. It attributes about 100,000 deaths yearly to alcoholism. Joining her in the press conference were actors Adrian Zmed and Jonathan Prince, actresses Michelle Lee and Melissa Anderson, keyboard player Mylan Williams of the Commodores, and former Los Angeles Dodgers baseball player Sweet Lou Johnson, who said his alcoholism nearly cost his life.
