Roosevelt ‘Doing Well’ After Colon Cancer Surgery

James Roosevelt, 79, eldest son of former President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was “resting comfortably” Thursday after three hours of surgery for colon cancer, according to officials at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

Doctors removed a portion of Roosevelt’s colon, said Orman Day, hospital spokesman. Day said a biopsy last week indicated that cancer was present.

“Mr. Roosevelt is doing well,” Day said, “and doctors feel that they were able to remove all of the cancer.”

Dr. Robert Mason, chairman of the medical center’s surgery department, performed the operation, Day added.

Roosevelt, a former Los Angeles congressman, United Nations delegate and now a member of the Orange County Transportation Commission, is expected to spend at least a week recovering at the medical center.

He entered the hospital last week, but surgery was postponed after he fell in a bathroom.

Roosevelt suffered a small stroke last month but said recently he had “fully recovered.”

Two weeks ago on Capitol Hill in Washington, Roosevelt defended his National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare against congressional criticism that it had needlessly frightened the elderly with mass mailings claiming that their benefits were in jeopardy.
