Sentence Suspended in ‘Chivalry’ Death

TOKYO — A Briton who kicked to death a Japanese man to protect a drunken woman on the street has received a suspended sentence from Japan’s Supreme Court, a court official said Saturday.
The official said Judge Reijiro Tsunoda dismissed a final appeal by John Bellamy, who said he took his action to protect the woman under the British spirit of chivalry.
In the summer of 1981, the 36-year-old karate expert kicked the face of the Japanese man after he saw the drunken woman fall down and heard her shout for help in English. The 31-year-old Japanese died eight days later from a head injury.
The Briton, who was charged with inflicting bodily injury resulting in death, received a three-year suspended sentence.
