The former college student who helped the FBI arrest Soviet physicist Gennadi Zakharov on spy charges in August said Zakharov offered to pay him money for classified information and “had big plans for me,” New York magazine reported. The identity of the former Queens College student, Leakh Bhoge, 30, an immigrant from Guyana, was disclosed in the cover story of the magazine’s April 6 issue. The magazine reported Bhoge was paid $20,000 by the FBI to act as a double agent in helping to catch Zakharov. The FBI declined to comment and Bhoge could not be reached. Zakharov pleaded no contest to three espionage charges Sept. 30 and was ordered to leave the United States.
