The Food and Drug Administration told drug companies to stop using the substance danthron in their laxatives and to recall any products that contain the ingredient. The decision was based on recent studies showing that chronic administration of high doses of danthron to rats and mice resulted in the development of intestinal and liver cancers. Toxicity of danthron in humans has not been demonstrated.
