NHL Roundup : Devils Extend Penguin Winless Streak

Share

Perry Anderson scored three goals and John MacLean picked up four assists to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 5-3 victory over Pittsburgh at East Rutherford, N.J., Tuesday night, extending the Penguins’ winless streak to six games.

Anderson, who had just six goals in 53 games this season and had never scored three goals in a National Hockey League game, broke a 3-3 tie at 9:36 of the final period, deflecting a shot by defenseman Bruce Driver past Penguin goalie Gilles Meloche with the Devils on a power play.

“It’s my first hat trick. It’s amazing,” Anderson said. “It’s one of those things you always dream of and finally it happens. My game is up and down the ice and take the body. Any goals I get are a bonus. Scoring goals is Lady Lucky unless you are (Wayne) Gretzky.”

Boston 4, Quebec 3--Goals by Tom McCarthy and Nevin Markwart 33 seconds apart in the third period broke a tie and gave the Bruins the win over the Nordiques at Quebec.

McCarthy got his 29th goal of the year on a rebound at 4:08 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie, and Markwart scored 33 seconds later on a breakaway.

The victory enabled Boston to move within one point of the Montreal Canadians in the battle for second place in the Adams Division. Boston has two games left, and Montreal has three.

New York Islanders 4, St. Louis 3--Pat LaFontaine scored twice to help the Islanders win at St. Louis and remain a point behind the Washington Capitals in the race for second place in the Patrick Division.

LaFontaine continued a scoring surge that gave him eight goals in as many games and 37 for the season.

Doug Gilmour scored his 39th goal of the year for St. Louis, which has clinched a playoff spot.

Washington 4, Toronto 2--Bob Gould scored a pair of goals at Landover, Md., as the Capitals ran their unbeaten string to six games.

Washington, second in the Patrick Division, has gone 5-0-1 in its last six outings and has allowed only 13 goals in that span.

The loss cost the Maple Leafs a chance to move into third place in the Norris Division. Toronto remained one point behind Chicago and Minnesota.

Edmonton 5, Winnipeg 4--Defenseman Steve Smith scored at 2:29 of overtime at Edmonton to give the Oilers the victory over the Jets, who had rallied from a four-goal deficit.

Jet goalie Pokey Reddick accidently steered the winning goal into his net when he swiped at Smith’s slapshot from the point with his stick. The goal, an unassisted effort, was Smith’s seventh of the season.
