The body of a woman, who appears to have been strangled, was found Wednesday morning on the Genesee Avenue off-ramp of Interstate 5 by a GA Technologies security guard who was patrolling the area, police said. Her husband is being held on suspicion of murder.

The body is believed to be that of Maria Paredes, 39, of the Los Angeles area, police said. It was found about 4:30 a.m. Deputy Coroner Charles Kelley said an autopsy is scheduled for today.

The security guard said a 1961 Rambler pulled to the side of the off-ramp, turned off its lights, then sped off.

Police stopped the northbound vehicle at the Border Patrol’s San Onofre checkpoint, about one hour after the body was found. Police arrested the driver, Felipi Paredes, 38, whose wife is Maria Paredes. He was booked into County Jail on suspicion of murder.

Police spokesman Bill Robinson said investigators believe the woman may have been killed in Los Angeles and then transported to San Diego.
