Rep. Richard A. Gephardt (D-Mo.) is the first presidential candidate to apply for federal matching money for his campaign, a Federal Election Commission spokesman said Thursday.

Fred Eiland said the Gephardt for President Committee had submitted the required forms reflecting that he raised at least $5,000 in 20 states from individual contributions of no more than $250.

The forms will be reviewed by the FEC’s audit staff to ensure that all the contributions are valid before the commission certifies Gephardt to receive matching funds.
