Show Is a ‘Shoe-In’

There’s an heiress on the lam in Santa Barbara, and you might recognize her by her sneakers. They have an L.A. Gear label on the outside. Listen hears this from Deborah Kelman of the daytime soap “Santa Barbara” press office. She says actress Robin Wright (Kelley Capwell on the show) is wearing the sneaks as part of her WANTED wear. (Kelley is suspected for committing murder.) Kelman says L.A. Gear has been supplying athletic shoes for all members of the “Santa Barbara” cast. Wright’s are the color of socialite-white gloves.

In-Tent on Melrose

Big changes are scheduled at the Laise Adzer store on Melrose Avenue. And by big, we mean the size of a tent. Inside will be Moroccan pillows and carpets, according to store manager Maegan Hall, who says the new addition will be reserved for entertainment-industry clients meeting with their stylists and wardrobe consultants. Hall tells Listen she hopes the tent will be ready in time for Aretha Franklin’s May visit to the city. But for the moment, the Michigan-based queen of soul and Hall have been dealing by telephone, “at the recommendation of Tina Turner and Diana Ross.” And the singer’s fingers have obviously done some successful walking, because at least some of the clothes she’s selected are scheduled to receive national attention. They include the giant cape and cocoon-shape skirt over streamlined pants that Franklin wears on an upcoming cover of US magazine.

Putting a Label on It

She may not know her lines yet, but Kathleen Turner knows what label will be attached to her wardrobe when she starts filming her next movie, “Switching Channels,” later this year. Turner will co-star with Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve in the film, and everyone will be costumed by Nino Cerruti, says the Italian designer’s West Coast spokesperson Mary Hall Ross. None of the details about who wears what by Cerruti, exactly, have yet been decided, Ross says. The better to Listen for, my dears.

Makeover Double-Header

It sounds as if it’ll be a beauty makeover to break the records when country singers Naomi and Wynonna Judd both get restyled in 2 1/2 minutes. This is the challenge Gina Furth of L.A.’s Yuki salon faces April 6 as the mother-and-daughter team hosts the Country Music Awards show at Knott’s Berry Farm. Furth tells Listen she’ll be waiting in the wings when the Judds take a quick break for a complete costume change and go from “soft and natural” shoulder-length hair styles to “hip and young” sweeping up-dos. How will Furth do it? She’ll no doubt have to do some fancy legwork too.

One for the Road

As fashion accessories go, it’s on the large size, but that probably won’t deter May Co. shoppers from trying to win a 1959 pink Cadillac, worth about $15,000, a store spokesman tells Listen. Candie’s shoe and sportswear company is sponsoring this Win a Caddy sweepstakes through May Co.’s 34 Southern California stores. Entry forms will be in the women’s shoe departments until April 18, with the winner announced in May.

Sunset Buying Spree

Sasha Stallone went on a bit of a leather spree recently at North Beach Leather on Sunset Boulevard. Store manager Shelly Slovin tells Listen that Sasha fell in love with almost the entire spring collection of designer Michael Hoban--and bought almost everything. “It’s very hard for her to decide not to go for all the things she tries on, because she’s the perfect shape for our stuff,” Hoban says. She parted with more than a dozen pieces: dresses, jackets, skirts and pants, in blue, pink, yellow and other colors. Also in the store recently, Slovin says, was singer Stevie Wonder, who bought a green baseball-style jacket and black pleated pants for a TV interview.

Brides on a Budget

The rich and famous do watch their pennies, even when it comes to bridal finery with four-digit price tags. That’s the word from Renee Strauss, who says: “The celebrities work on budgets just like anyone else.” She ought to know. Heather Locklear, Charlene Tilton and Valerie Bertinelli chose their gowns at Strauss’ store on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. The current bridal registry includes Deborah Adair, from “Finders of Lost Loves,” and Bridget Michele, a new face on “Rags to Riches.” Locklear’s mermaid sheath, “which was so tight she could hardly walk,” is history by now (she was married last May). What the future holds for Adair and Michele is a little vague. Strauss would only give bare-bones descriptions: Adair has chosen “something ultra-feminine in all-natural fibers,” and Michele has fallen for a gown that’s “a very sophisticated, very chic European import.” But will their fiances be able to top Locklear’s bridegroom, Tommy Lee of Motley Cru, who walked down the aisle in a white leather tuxedo?

Makeup for Yuppie Faces

There’s even a makeup for the yuppie face. It’s called the “upscale sporty look,” Listen hears from Jeff Angell. He’s a professional makeup artist who recently applied the right stuff to supermodel Kim Alexis on her way to tape a pilot for a talk show she’ll co-host with body-builder Jake Steinfeld. The upscale face of fitness consists of “earth-tone cheek and eye shades and a natural-color lipstick that warms the face and gives it a glow,” Angell says. He spells it out in his new book, “The Makeup Difference,” sold at Merle Norman makeup boutiques.
