Library Vote Issue

Share

The question of whether the November, 1987, ballot will include an advisory vote on the location of a possible new central library will be discussed at the May 6 Rules Committee meeting in the City Council chambers.

I urge all who support an advisory vote on the location of a possible library to attend the Rules Committee meeting or write the mayor and council members expressing support for an advisory vote. The timing for the advisory vote is perfect since the council is scheduled to make its decision on the new central library’s location in November or December.

After we decide on a location, the June, 1988, ballot can then include a vote on a bond issue to finance the library.

Why is this advisory vote on the library’s location so important at this time? Because if the public dislikes the downtown location chosen by the City Council, the bond issue will likely fail. If by that time the alternative Sears site has been sold, we will be right back to square one on the issue of a central library with no prospects in sight.

This is an opportunity for the public to affect a major decision early in the process. As we have seen, 11th-hour attempts to change a decision already made seldom succeed.
