YWCA to Present Awards Marking Achievements of 6 County Women

The YWCA of North Orange County will award silver medallions to six Orange County women for their achievements in six categories:

- Evelyn Bauman of Fullerton for volunteer community service. Bauman, a mountain climber, is being honored for helping found the Fullerton Children’s League, Fullerton Cooperative Nursery School and Fullerton Friends of Music. A supporter of Cal State Fullerton, she serves on its President’s Advisory Board. She is a past president of the YWCA of North Orange County.

- Georgia Spooner of Corona del Mar for her contributions to cultural arts. She is founding chairwoman of the guilds of the Orange County Performing Arts Center.

- Louise Pomeroy of La Habra Heights for business and industry. She is founder and president of Abigail Abbott Personnel Companies, which provides temporary employees to companies in Orange and Los Angeles counties. She is also being recognized for her service on the boards of the Lestonnac Free Clinic, Orange County Chamber of Commerce political action committee and Orange County regional Board of Merchants.

- Norma Brandel Gibbs of Huntington Beach for her public affairs work. Gibbs, former mayor of Seal Beach and Huntington Beach, is a professor of educational psychology at Cal State Long Beach. She also is being honored for having directed plans for the Huntington Beach Cultural Center and Library, the Mary Magdalene Project, which opened a home for prostitutes who wish to change professions, and Interval House shelter for victims of domestic violence.

- Narda Zacchino of Irvine in the field of communications. Zacchino is editor of the Orange County edition of the Los Angeles Times. The YWCA judging committee cited her for being instrumental in creating a magazine to mark the opening of the Orange County Performing Arts Center. The YWCA noted that she “has worked to uphold communication links with the Orange County community.”

- Jan Billings for the category of professions. Billings, principal of Walker Junior High School in Anaheim, organized the Magnolia High School PTA College-Career Night and served as group leader for the mentally gifted minors program, the YWCA judging committee said in its citation.
