Cherry Hill Mile : Harriman Scores Easy Win
Harriman, a winner of three stakes races during the winter, scored a front-running 4 1/2-length victory over Mr. S.M. in the $106,300 third running of the Cherry Hill Mile at Garden State Park on Saturday.
Nominated to all the Triple Crown races, Harriman covered the eight furlongs in a mediocre 1:37 4/5 in winning for the third time in five starts this year.
The dark bay colt, who was ridden by Alberto Delgado, was never threatened in this, the first of New Jersey’s major 3-year-old races leading into the Triple Crown events.
The second test comes in two weeks in the Garden State Stakes and Harriman might run in that race, said his trainer, Charlie Peoples.
Mr. S.M., off at 9-1 odds with Frank Lovato Jr., edged Why Not Try by a neck for second with High Brite coming in fourth, another quarter-length back.
Harriman returned $9, $5 and $4.20 and earned a purse of $63,780.
