Eight-foot snowdrifts in North Carolina kept would-be church-goers home. Snow depths included 18 inches at Boone, N.C.; 26.5 inches at Welch, W. Va.; 20 to 33 inches in southwestern Virginia’s Buchanan County, and 18 inches at Middlesboro, Ky. Freezing temperatures set record lows in at least two dozen cities in Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. Unseasonably cold temperatures have plagued the South since March 29, devastating Alabama’s $10-million peach crop. Interstate 40 near the North Carolina-Tennessee border, closed since Friday, was reopened.
