The NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund named California as one of eight states on its “honor roll” for having laws protecting education opportunities for women, but the group criticized the state for not enforcing them. “You have a good law on the books that doesn’t get very far,” said Leslie Wolfe, director of the fund. California enacted the Sex Equity in Education Act in 1982, which prohibits sex discrimination in schools that receive state funds or enroll students who receive state aid. But a study by the fund reports that no state agency or official is responsible for implementing regulations for the law, leaving it unenforced.
