Covina Seeking to Buy Elementary School Site
The City Council has given the Redevelopment Agency approval to start negotiations to buy the former Cienega Elementary School site from the Covina-Valley Unified School District.
The agency wants to use the 10.7-acre site to expand the city’s ArrowGrand Business Park, which lies on 25 acres abutting the school site. However, the school site is zoned for single-family homes and developing it for any other use would require a zoning change.
Michael A. Marquez, director of community development for the city, said he plans to obtain the zoning change from the Planning Commission before the city purchases the property, which has been valued by an appraiser at $3.4 million.
