A teen-age homecoming queen who was expelled from a church school for modeling swimsuits may keep her title and go on working when she returns to school under a settlement reached Friday.

“If you really believe in something and just stick up for it, it will work out for the best,” said Machelle Outlaw, 17. The settlement restored her full privileges at Goldsboro Christian School.

Outlaw was expelled on March 11 by the Rev. Tom Harper, pastor of Second Baptist Church, after he learned that she had been modeling swimsuits at a fashion show at a department store.

The settlement, read in Wayne County Superior Court, said Outlaw “will be given the opportunity to make up any work, tests or assignments she missed without any penalty whatsoever.”

The private school, sponsored by Goldsboro’s Second Baptist Church, also agreed to review its expulsion policies and delete any mention of Outlaw’s expulsion from her school record.

A civil suit against the school by the girl’s attorney, Gene Braswell, was dropped as part of the settlement, and Outlaw agreed to comply with all announced school rules.
