Games That Employers Play

Share

I would like to know what the name of the game is so I can join in for some fun too.

The game is mostly being played by large aerospace, aircraft and telecommunications companies, but the smaller commercial electronic manufacturers and product development companies are rapidly learning the rules.

What is it called when there are thousands of unemployed who search the newspapers’ classified ads to discover the pages abounding with glorious advertisements of companies in need? One becomes excited by the promise of a new and lasting future. Your excitement comes from the promise that someone out there is really in need of a person with your qualifications and experience. So you send off your perfect resume and wait for the phone to ring for the anticipated interview.

But wait! You have just entered the game and you don’t know the rules. No calls after waiting a week or two. OK, they may be overwhelmed by potential game players. So you call to inquire, only to get a secretary who at times I think is dating a robot, that informs you:

The resumes are being distributed.

The personnel manager is busy, may I take your name and phone number.

The position is on hold.

The position has been filled (already!).

All of the above.

Bewilderment and frustration are the game managers. False hopes and lead-on enticements are a few of the players. The score is always the same as you end another week of playing a game without a name, only to have to go up to bat again when Monday comes.
