Michigan Democratic leaders changed the way they pick national convention delegates, a system that last time around prompted complaints by Gary Hart and a court challenge by Jesse Jackson. With little debate, the Democratic State Central Committee picked March 26 as the date for the 1988 presidential preference caucus, securing a spot for Michigan in the party’s presidential sweepstakes. The caucus date places Michigan behind Illinois but before many other large states. The new plan also drops the requirement that Democrats sign their names on presidential preference ballots.
