A railroad tanker car containing hydrochloric acid sprang a leak today and sent toxic fumes into the air, forcing the evacuation of about 2,000 people and sending at least 50 to area hospitals.

The tanker car was being used to store the 42% acid solution at a truck and car wash about two miles east of downtown Gary. Authorities said the hydrochloric acid was mixing with rain to produce toxic fumes, and about 50 people were admitted to area hospitals complaining of headaches, dizziness, nausea and hyperventilation.
