A Navy helicopter flew an injured crewman from a Liberian-registry cargo ship 140 miles south of San Diego to a hospital in La Jolla, the Coast Guard reported.

Giuseppe Arzani, an Italian seaman, was flown by an H-3 Helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital. He was released from the hospital after being treated for a cut at the base of his skull.

The Coast Guard in San Diego received a call at 10:20 a.m. from the vessel Mount Cabrite, which reported that Arzani was seriously injured, Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Dennis Fahr said. The Navy base at North Island was called for assistance because three Coast Guard helicopters were disabled, Fahr said.

The Navy helicopter, with four crewmen aboard, was on maneuvers off San Clemente Island. It returned to North Island to refuel and pick up a medic. The helicopter left about 12:10 p.m. and reached the ship at 1:04 p.m.
