An 18-year-old honor student at Gardena High School was shot dead early today as he sat in his pickup truck at a traffic light in Inglewood.

Daniel Lawrence Bonner was shot once in the chest with a large-caliber weapon at Crenshaw Boulevard and Imperial Highway shortly before 1 a.m., according to Sgt. Harold Moret of the Inglewood Police Department. Moret said Bonner staggered out of his car, approached an ambulance that had pulled up alongside him and told the crew he had been shot. The crew administered first aid and took Bonner to Centinela Hospital, where he died at 1:35 a.m., Moret said.

With school closed for spring vacation, Bonner had spent Tuesday at Magic Mountain with several friends and had just dropped the last of them off when he was shot, Moret said.

Police said that Bonner was not a gang member and that drugs or robbery did not appear to have been involved. “There is no reason something like this should have happened to this kid,” Moret said.

Police have no suspects and are seeking witnesses.
