Volkswagen of America has agreed to launch an arbitration program to settle disputes over engine problems in certain Volkswagens and Audis, the Federal Trade Commission announced today.

The program, which could involve as many as 1 million cars, settles a 1981 commission complaint that Volkswagen knew about engine problems in the cars but failed to inform consumers. Under the plan, Volkswagen will agree to impartial third-party arbitration in disputes with car owners. The company has indicated it will choose the Better Business Bureaus to administer the program.
