Orange County College Roundup : Hamelin Homers Lead UCLA Past UCI

Bob Hamelin, a 1986 graduate of Irvine High School, returned home Tuesday night and hit two home runs to lead the UCLA baseball team to an 8-0 victory over UC Irvine in a nonconference game played in front of an estimated 600 fans at Anteater Field.

The freshman first baseman hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and a two-run homer in eighth to bring his season total to 11 home runs in 89 at-bats. Hamelin also scored three runs for the Bruins, who are ranked sixth nationally by Collegiate Baseball Magazine.

Seven UCLA pitchers combined for the shutout as the Bruins improved to 30-13-1. It marked only the second time this season that the Anteaters (19-19-1) had been held scoreless. Their last shutout came against Cal State Northridge, which defeated Irvine, 14-0, on Feb. 3.

Irvine resumes Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. play Thursday night when the Anteaters play host to Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series to determine first place in the conference.

Thursday will be City of Irvine night, and all fans will be admitted free. A pregame ceremony to dedicate the new lights on the baseball field begins at 6:30 p.m., and the game will follow at 7.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play:

Cal State Los Angeles 8, Chapman 4--Left-hander Rod Windes pitched a complete game, allowing 11 hits but striking out 10, to lead the Golden Eagles to the victory over the Panthers at Los Angeles.

Chapman’s Darren Nelson had a double and a single to extend his hitting streak to 20 games and drove in his 52nd and 53rd runs of the year. Bryan Beals, Mike Cruz and Jeff Morrison also had two hits each for Chapman (7-6 in the CCAA, 19-19 overall).

Catcher John Kusel was 3 for 3 with two RBIs for Cal State L.A. (5-11, 19-24-1). Chapman starter Jeff Mooney (6-4) allowed five earned runs in 7 innings and took the loss, which snapped his five-game winning streak.

In softball action:

Cal State Fullerton 4-8, UC Santa Barbara 2-0--Connie Clark pitched a four-hitter and struck out 12 in the opening game, and Janice Okerlund pitched an eight-hitter and struck out six in the nightcap to lead the Titans to the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. doubleheader sweep of the Gauchos at Goleta.

Chenita Rogers had four hits, three stolen bases and scored two runs, and Carey Hess had four hits, four RBIs and two stolen bases on the day for top-ranked Fullerton (15-0, 38-2). Clark improved to 21-0.
