A man apparently drowned Wednesday near the Islandia dock on Mission Bay while he was cleaning the hull of his boat.

Richard Anthony Doyle, 34, of San Diego was outfitted in scuba gear when he had an accident, a lifeguard spokesman said.

Doyle was taken by Life Flight helicopter to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m. An autopsy will be performed.

Elsewhere, a lifeguard was injured about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday as he was trying to help two swimmers caught in a rip current at Mission Beach. A spokesman said John Boncher, 24, apparently was hit by the rescue boat.

He said Boncher was taken to a local clinic used by lifeguards. No further details were available late Wednesday.
