The Vancouver Canucks won the won the first round in their legal battle with the National Hockey League over the hiring of Pat Quinn.

Justice Wallace Oppal of the British Columbia Supreme Court dismissed an NHL application, which argued that the league cannot be sued because it is an unincorporated, voluntary association.

The Canucks initiated the suit after Quinn was expelled from the league in January and the club was fined $310,000 for alleged violations in the hiring of Quinn as their general manager.
