Boston Manager John McNamara, worried about a potential conflict over Red Sox right-hander Roger Clemens, said he wants somebody else to pick the pitching staff of the American League team for the July 14 All-Star game at Oakland.

Traditionally, the All-Star manager picks his own pitching staff, but McNamara has balked at the idea because of provisions in Clemens’ recently signed contract.

The contract calls for Clemens, the AL’s Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Award winner last year, to collect a $150,000 bonus if he makes the All-Star team.

“This is something I’ve been thinking about since we won the pennant last October,” McNamara said. “It’s not a good situation, no matter who’s involved.

The Boston manager said he plans to discuss other ways of picking the pitching staff with league President Bobby Brown.
