Local News in Brief : Driver Arrested After Passenger Dies in Fall
A22-year-old Torrance man whose pickup truck rolled 400 feet down a steep hill early Saturday north of Castaic, killing a passenger, was under arrest at a local hospital on suspicion of drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter, authorities said.
Dawn D. Wehmeyer, 22, of Torrance, was killed in the 3 a.m. accident, California Highway Patrol Officer Monty Keifer said.
Brian P. Foley was being treated for “moderate to major” injuries at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, Keifer said.
At the time of the accident, Foley had been driving the Toyota pickup at about 20 m.p.h through a light fog and drizzle along a dirt road west of the Golden State Freeway near Templin Highway, Keifer said.
Foley rounded a curve and lost control of the pickup, which rolled over several times, authorities said.
Foley probably survived because he was ejected from the pickup before it came to rest, Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Mike Carrick said.
He crawled up the hill to the roadway, where a passer-by found him more than six hours after the accident and called authorities, Carrick said.
