Annette Strauss of Dallas and Betty Turner of Corpus Christi won runoff elections to become the first women mayors in the history of their cities. “We reached for the stars,” said Strauss, Dallas’ mayor pro tem. “And don’t you just love the stardust on your hands?” In defeating Fred Meyer, former chairman of the Dallas County Republican Party, Strauss collected 55.99% of the vote. Strauss, a two-term council member, is the sister-in-law of former Democratic National Chairman Robert S. Strauss. Corpus Christi voters elected Turner, a former mayor pro tem, over Tony Bonilla, former national president of the League of United Latin American Citizens. Turner had 57.7% of the vote.
