Two Mexican aliens were injured and another was raped Friday night when border bandits began shooting at a group of 30 to 40 Mexican nationals who had just crossed the international border near Brown Field, San Diego police said.

About 8 p.m. Friday, the group of illegal aliens were in Martinez Canyon near Otay Mesa and Heritage roads when they encountered six Latino men who offered to help guide them north, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Two of the six men then took out handguns in an apparent robbery attempt, Robinson said. The aliens began to run, and the armed men began shooting.

Enrique Fernandez-Rocha was shot in the back while fleeing, and Sergio Zamora-Magana was beaten by one of the suspects with “a blunt instrument” after he tripped and fell, according to Robinson. Both of the injured men are 20 years old and from San Antonio de Campo in the Mexican state of Michoacan.

Both men were discovered by police this morning and taken to Mercy Hospital. Fernandez-Rocha was listed in good condition after surgery, and Zamora-Magana was treated for minor head wounds and released to the U.S. Border Patrol Saturday afternoon, Robinson said.

A 23-year-old woman from the Mexican state of Guerrero was separated from the group by one of the gunmen, taken to a spot nearby and raped. She was also found by police Saturday morning, and taken to Physicians and Surgeons Hospital for examination and treatment.
