An off-duty Los Angeles police officer shot and killed a man he said attacked him with a knife in an apparent robbery attempt outside a convenience store. Sheriff’s Sgt. John Andrews said Officer Carl McGill, 28, a three-year police veteran who works at the 77th Street Division, told investigators a man in his 20s struck him and scuffled with him as he left a liquor store on Slauson Avenue in Ladera Heights. McGill said he broke free, retreated, identified himself as a police officer and drew his revolver. He said he opened fire when the man drew a kitchen knife and lunged at him. The suspect ran about 250 yards, collapsed and was later pronounced dead at Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Inglewood.
