Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies shot and critically wounded a man they said pointed a gun at them. A sheriff’s spokesman said the deputies had asked the driver to get out of a 1983 Ford Thunderbird at 89th Street and Compton Avenue in the Firestone area when they noticed a second man reclining in the tilted-back passenger seat. The spokesman said the man, identified as Miguel Hernandez, 21, of Los Angeles, suddenly seized a .38-caliber handgun that had been lying on the seat by his leg and pointed it at the deputy on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Both deputies opened fire. Hernandez was later listed in critical condition after undergoing surgery at Martin Luther King Jr.-Drew Medical Center.
