“Onion Field” killer Gregory Powell pleaded not guilty to a charge of possessing marijuana at the California Medical Facility at Vacaville. Attorney Daniel Russo said in Solano Municipal Court that the charge is an effort to wreck the 52-year-old Powell’s parole chances. The California Supreme Court has ordered his parole, but it has been stayed pending an appellate court review. Powell was convicted of killing a Los Angeles police officer near Bakersfield in 1963. The crime was the subject of the book and film, “The Onion Field.”
