Chargers Will Give Jaworski a Try, but Not as Competition for Fouts

The Chargers will look at veteran free-agent quarterback Ron Jaworski in a workout Thursday but apparently don’t view him as competition for starter Dan Fouts.

Jaworski, 36, who was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles after the 1986 season, recently tried out with the Raiders, and the Chargers will give him a look before the start of Friday’s mini-camp. He also is scheduled to work out with the Seattle Seahawks.

Steve Ortmayer, director of football operations, said he doesn’t view Jaworski as a rival to Fouts for the starting job. The Chargers have two backup quarterbacks on their roster, Mark Herrmann and Tom Flick.

Coach Al Saunders has said the Chargers are looking for a young quarterback to groom as a replacement for Fouts, who will be 36 in June, but he hasn’t specified whether the team will draft a young quarterback this year.
