General Electric is bracing for a strike at NBC.

Top officials of GE were warned at their annual meeting that the company’s NBC unit may soon face a crippling strike by a union representing broadcast cameramen, technicians and news writers. Arthur Kent, head of the negotiating committee for the National Assn. of Broadcast Employees and Technicians, said that while union members do not want to walk off their jobs, “it left us no alternative but to strike.” NABET has objected to a proposal that would allow the network to fill up to 4% of jobs during the contract’s first year with workers hired on a one-day basis. The second year 6% could be hired on such a basis. Contract talks broke off March 31. An NBC spokesman declined comment.
