Parents, Teachers, Students Group Will Hold Convention in Anaheim

The California Parents, Teachers and Students Assn. will hold its annual convention Monday through Thursday at the Anaheim Convention Center. About 2,000 parents, teachers, students and administrators are expected to attend the 88th annual conclave with the theme “PTA Works for Kids.”

Gov. George Deukmejian and state Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig will be among the featured speakers.

The keynote speaker will be Odaris Jordan, principal of Jordan High School in Los Angeles, who will discuss how schools and communities can benefit through cooperation in her talk, “Partnerships That Work.”

Resolutions to be considered by the delegates will deal with state funding for schools, the need to educate students about the hazards of second-hand smoke, substance abuse during pregnancy, ethics in political campaigns and possible prohibitions on the promotion of tobacco products.

The four major “critical issue” conferences will deal with “educating today’s youth for tomorrow’s responsibilities,” the changing family, dealing with family stress and juvenile justice.

Opening ceremonies will take place at the first general meeting on April 28 at 8:30 a.m. California State PTSA president Donnetta Spink will preside at all general meetings. Delegates will be welcomed by Rosann Turigliatto, president of the host PTSA district.

California Teacher of the Year Shirley Rosenkranz, an English teacher at Temple City High School, will discuss how she tries to instill her pupils with self-confidence.
