School Board Picks Burbank Superintendent

The Burbank School Board on Thursday chose the Bangor, Me., school superintendent to replace Supt. Wayne Boulding, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Arthur Newton Pierce, 51, who has been superintendent of the 4,400-student Bangor district for more than six years, will assume his new duties on Aug. 3, board President Claud Field said.

The Burbank Unified School District has about 11,400 students in kindergarten through 12th-grade.

The board unanimously chose Pierce, who has been a school superintendent for 19 years. His annual salary will be $75,000.

‘He Will Fit Here Very Well’

“We really feel he is the right person for us,” Field said. “His experience and his personality are excellent, and he will fit here very well.”

Pierce has experience with the middle-school concept, which features four-year high schools and scales back elementary schools to kindergarten through fifth grade, Field said. Burbank officials are considering converting the city’s schools to that configuration.

Pierce previously was superintendent of the school districts in Brewer, Me., and Hanover, N. H.
