In a rare move, the chief justice of the British Columbia Supreme Court has intervened in the Vancouver Canucks’ suit against the National Hockey League by pushing ahead the trial date several months to Aug. 31.

The suit stems from the league’s $310,000 fine against the Canucks for signing Pat Quinn to a $1.16-million contract as general manager while he was still coaching the Kings. Quinn was expelled from coaching in the league until the 1990-91 season.

The Canucks have asked the court to lift the order by NHL President John Ziegler.
