Theft of Bridge Has Officials Up a Creek
Cedar County authorities aren’t sure what to make of their latest theft case: a missing bridge.
Sheriff’s officials say that within the last two weeks someone dismantled and stole a 16-by-24-foot bridge over a small creek southwest of Mechanicsville.
“I’ve had vandals take odds and ends and maybe a signpost, but never a bridge,” County Engineer Bill Conner said.
Conner said the thief or thieves took the wooden planks off the bridge, situated on a closed dirt road, then used torches to remove the steel supports. He estimated the loss at $1,250.
