Activities Mark American Home Week : National Association of Brokers Fetes Its 40th Anniversary
On the heels of Realtist Week, marking the 40th anniversary of the National Assn. of Real Estate Brokers, the National Assn. of Realtors today begins its celebration, National American Home Week, with a number of activities planned by Southland realty boards.
Among them is a seminar for home buyers co-hosted by the Los Angeles and Santa Monica boards Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles board’s headquarters, 601 S. Ardmore Ave. Panelists will include Stephen Groome, senior counsel for the Legal Services Divison of the California Assn. of Realtors; Greg Knowles, executive sales manager for Chicago Title Co.; Jon Douglas, president of the Jon Douglas Co.; Debbie Faber, president of the Escrow Institute of California and president of Niguel Escrow.
During the program, seven Los Angeles area high school seniors will be presented with $200 scholarships.
Prayer Breakfast Set
The Southeast Board of Realtors will hold a senior citizens bingo party today to celebrate the week, followed by its “Yard Beautiful” contest Monday with the awarding of certificates; “Youth Day” Tuesday with the presentation of trophies and savings bonds to top high-school seniors; “Professional Women’s Day” Wednesday with a special luncheon; “Civic Recognition Luncheon” Thursday, featuring Los Angeles County Supervisor Pete Schabarum as speaker, and a prayer breakfast on Friday.
The Anaheim Board of Realtors will entertain city council and department heads at a luncheon Friday to mark the week, and the Arcadia Board of Realtors is sponsoring an art contest for elementary students and a meeting for members Tuesday, featuring Tom Schaefer, an Iranian hostage, as guest speaker.
Two boards began the week-long celebration with events Saturday. The South Orange County Board of Realtors held a conference titled “Back to the Future,” focusing on growth in the area, and the Burbank Board of Realtors participated in “Burbank on Parade.” The Burbank board also selected winners of an essay contest for junior high school students, titled “Living in Burbank.”
‘Time of Reflection’
The Covina/San Gabriel Valley Board of Realtors is holding a poster contest for elementary school students and a booth at a local shopping center to distribute literature about what the week means. The week has been described as “a time of reflection on the benefits of owning a home.”
In keeping with this theme, the Monrovia-Duarte Board of Realtors will hold an open house Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at its offices, 114 W. Colorado Blvd., for prospective home buyers. Representatives of title, escrow, insurance and home-protection plan companies will be there to answer questions.
The South Pasadena Board of Realtors will honor 70 homes in the South Pasadena/San Marino areas that show pride of ownership and winners of an essay contest for high-school students on “Why Homeownership is Fundamental to the American Way of Life.” Those winners will compete in state and, possibly, national contests, which will award a trip to Hawaii as the top prize.
The South Pasadena board also held a poster contest for elementary school students on “My Dream American Home.” There were more than 500 entries. All are on display in a local library, and awards will be given Friday at a ceremony for the winners.
That board will also hold a home-buying/-selling seminar Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the South Pasadena/San Marino YMCA. The seminar will feature a panel of lenders, appraisers and real estate agents.
