The World : Sri Lanka May Cancel Vote
Sri Lankan President Junius R. Jayewardene announced that he will cancel elections scheduled for 1989 and try to extend his troubled term unless the problem of Tamil violence is solved. The 80-year-old Jayewardene also called on Sri Lankans to support government efforts “to wipe out terrorism, either through a negotiated settlement or through military means.” Jayewardene, in his second term as president, is not allowed to run for a third term. Meanwhile, the government reported that a land mine blew up a military armored car, killing eight people, in an area infiltrated by Tamil rebels near Trincomalee.
