Disneyland has started construction on a new ride based on the Disney film “Song of the South.” The ride, featuring more than 100 animated animal characters, depicts the adventures of Brer Rabbit. Cost of the new attraction, scheduled to open in January of 1989, was not disclosed. Disneyland publicist Joe Aguirre said the attraction, 60-foot high Splash Mountain, located in the “Bear Country” section of the Anaheim theme park, is only partly a thrill ride. Passengers will ride in eight-seat “logs” down a man-made river. “Portions of the exterior flumes will pick up speed (and there are) portions where the vehicle will slow down so people can take in the sights,” he said.
