Countywide : Central America Protest Takes to the Freeways
About a dozen people protesting the U.S. foreign policy in Central America displayed banners at several busy freeway overpasses in the county during rush hour Monday morning.
The county demonstrations coincided with protests in other parts of the nation. At CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., demonstrators blocked roads, leading to 450 arrests during a peaceful protest that caused rush-hour chaos, according to wire service reports.
No arrests were made and no incidents were reported in Orange County.
Irvine and Santa Ana police reported seeing signs that said “Stop Aid to the Contras,” “CIA Get Out of Central America” and “CIA Get Out of Nicaragua.” A spokesman for the Pledge of Resistance, which staged the demonstration, said a banner was also displayed at a freeway overpass in Anaheim.
Sgt. Tom Hume of Irvine described the demonstrators as “very cooperative” and mature. “For the most part there did not appear to be anyone under the age of 30,” Hume said.
