Saddleback College’s weekly student newspaper, the Lariat, was judged the best among more than 60 of California’s large community colleges in the 1987 competition of the Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges, officials announced over the weekend.

Saddleback Magazine, a once-a-year student publication, also won first place in the magazine general-excellence competition.

The community college collected 21 awards for its journalism programs. The announcements and awards came during the journalism association’s annual convention in Fresno.

“The competition had many excellent entries, and it showed that journalism education is very strong in California,” said J. Michael Reed, chairman of the journalism program at Saddleback College and adviser to the Lariat.

“We’re, of course, proud that our students won so many awards. Many of these awards were in on-the-spot competitions, and this shows the students are learning their journalism skills to do their jobs on the scene and do it well.”
