Ricky Gates, the engineer, and Edward Cromwell, the brakeman, both crewmen on the Conrail train involved in the fatal Jan. 4 Amtrak crash at Chase, Md., quit their jobs effective immediately, said Steve Lubetkin, a Conrail spokesman in Philadelphia. Conrail suspended Gates, 32, and Cromwell, 33, without pay after the crash, but Gates has been receiving unspecified benefits, officials said. The resignations came on the day of disciplinary hearings conducted by Amtrak and Conrail on possible drug and alcohol abuse factors in the crash.
