A Huntington Beach man who was charged with second-degree murder for a shooting outside a nightclub in 1985 was found not guilty Tuesday by a Superior Court jury.

The jury deliberated two days before returning its verdict on the charges against Ahmed N. Malley, 22.

Malley was arrested July 25, 1985, after Gary Lee England, 29, of Huntington Beach was found two doors away from Garfield’s nightclub, which is in the 19000 block of Magnolia Street. England had been shot in the forehead.

Police had been called to stop a fight in front of the nightclub’s doors and had separated two men. Shortly afterward, an officer patrolling the parking area heard a gunshot and arrested Malley’s brother, Azeez Malley, and several other men. Ahmed Malley later surrendered to police.

England’s body was found in the parking area in front of a restaurant two doors away from Garfield’s.

Garfield’s has since closed.

Charges against Azeez Malley were dropped when a judge found insufficient evidence to order a trial.
