South Bay : Hearing Set on Pipeline
A hearing on the Angeles Pipeline project, which would bring crude oil from the oil fields off Santa Barbara to South Bay refineries, is scheduled for 7:30 tonight in the Carson Community Center, 801 E. Carson St.
The hearing will be conducted by state Department of Transportation and the U.S. Forest Service, which will decide if the project’s environmental impact report is complete.
Oil company officials say the pipeline is the safest way to transport crude oil, which otherwise would be sent to the refineries by rail. They say the oil is needed to supply demand in the Los Angeles Basin, where most of it will be consumed.
Opposing the project are residents and officials who say that pipeline construction will disrupt traffic and that major spills are likely to be caused by earthquakes. In addition, they object to air pollution caused by refining the particularly dirty crude oil that will be pumped from the offshore fields.
