A coalition of groups battling AIDS on Wednesday announced a campaign featuring newspaper ads and radio and television public service announcements to educate the public about the disease.

The Southern California Cooperative AIDS Risk-Reduction Education Service (Cares), a coalition of 17 groups, said the campaign represents $500,000 worth of volunteer work and was financed by a $300,000 grant from the state Department of Health Services.

Coalition members include the AIDS Community Education Project of the county Health Care Agency and the AIDS Response Program of the Gay and Lesbian Community Service Center of Orange County.

Judy Spiegel, director of Southern California Cares, said the group hopes that television and radio stations will begin airing the announcements next week.

One spot is for the general public, she said. Others are aimed specifically at blacks, Latinos, teen-agers and young adults.

The ads are built around the theme “I’ve got dreams” and warn that the virus-caused disease is fatal, ending the dreams.
